About the Artist

Eliseo Art Silva was born in the Republic of the Philippines in 1972. His lineage to art is through his great grandfather who designed their family's ancestral home and painted murals of idyllic scenes on glass above doorways in their 19th century two-story ancestral house. He started drawing at the age of four, painted in oil and acrylic at nine years old and received formal art training at the age of eleven under the mentorship of Roger San Miguel. In 1985, he was granted full scholarship at the Philippine High School for the Arts which is situated at the foot of a dormant volcano. Among the school's visual arts faculty which has influenced Silva's work are Roberto Feleo, Alwin Reamillo, John Cinco and Gerardo Leonardo.

He received his BFA at Otis College of Art and Design in 1995, attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2002 and received his MFA under the auspices of Grace Hartigan and Dominique Nahas at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2003. Eliseo has painted more than twenty murals in Seattle, California, Philadelphia, Maine and the Philippines. He is the recepient of the Award of Design Excellence from the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, the Purchase Award from Liquitex Excellence in Art Student Grant, and The Joan Mitchell Foundation, Inc. 2003 MFA Grant.His work was included in the landmark exhibition Made in California: Art, Image, and Identity, 1900s 2000s organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the traveling group exhibition Memories of Overdevelopment: Philippine Diaspora in Contemporary Art which was organized by the University of California Irvine and Plug-In Gallery in Canada and shown in various cities in Canada and the United States (1997 - 1999) in commemoration of the Centennial of the Philippine Revolution against Spain. Silva is nationally recognized for painting the nation's largest Filipino American mural: Gintong Kasaysayan, Gintong Pamana (145' x 25') in Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles, California.
